Designing in the mobile dimension to a programme of face to face seminars.

posted Tuesday, 15 April 2008
At University of Bath we are about to roll our summer seminar series which are a number of 45 minute sessions. There are 5 sessions over 6 weeks. There is little new about that, however, for this event I have designed in a few new approaches that enhance the experience of the mobile learner.

1. Promotion and sign up.

The posters include a QR code, for more information about the event (a link), and an SMS registration number. People will register an interest to the event by simply SMS the workshop code and their BUCS username to us, and we'll email back.

2. Twitter through the event

We have created a twitter account for elearning at Bath (eatbath). This will be used to update people on event news, changes to the blog etc., during the event. The plan is to write a 160 word weekly news update. As well as let people use it as they like .. It's just a social network.

3. During the presentations.

The session leaders have autonomy over their own sessions. I'll be encouraging the following, a QR code on the presentations to link to where people can download the presentation (all of which will be in slideshare).

I will also experiment with the idea of broadcasting my session via skype. This will include visuals and audio, and encourage people ask questions.

I will evaluate the use of these approaches at the end of the seminar series.

I've just watched the keynote speeches from the JISC Conference 2008 streamed via UStream. The quality was impressive. Perhaps this is an alternative to broadcasting via Skype? What do you think?

Why not do no.2 above by/for mobile as well? You record a message and hang up. Then the system sends everyone registered an sms. Your audience clicks on the link to listen to the recorded message on your mobile. Its automatically stored on the web too for people wanting it that way and all calls at standard rate.

You can also record summaries of keynotes the same way. The speaker or yourself records a message over the phone. Everyone is automatically notified and can listen from anywhere.

If you're interested we can do it.
